Grab a hot drink or snack from a local shop in San Pedro de Atacama. The altitude and evening chill make something warm essential.

Head out toward El Tatio. The drive is long and the road is rough. Check the route and transport details carefully, as most agencies leave at 04:00 for the geysers, but for a sunset visit you will need to arrange your own transport or a private tour that departs later in the afternoon.

Arrive at the viewing area. The sun sets toward the WSW, casting long shadows across the geothermal field. The backdrop of the Andes against the fading light is the main event. The geysers themselves are small, but the lighting and variety are astounding. Bring layers; it gets cold quickly at 4200m.

Stay for the residual glow. The golden light lingers for a bit after the sun dips below the horizon. Use this time to rest your legs and let the silence of the desert settle in before the return trip to town.
Local tip
The altitude is significant. Move slowly and stay hydrated. The entrance fee is 15,000 pesos.
