Timeline

    Xunantunich

Take the free hand-cranked ferry from Succotz across the Mopan River. Walk the 1-mile path (mostly uphill) to the site. Wear good shoes and bring water, as you will spend about 3-4 hours exploring. Note that the main Visitor Center is closed indefinitely, but you can still view the stelae at the smaller Visitor Center further up the hill.

  2. 17:12

    Xunantunich

Find a spot on the upper terraces to watch the golden light hit the stone structures. The sun sets toward the WSW, offering a clear view of the sky changing color.

  3. 17:42

    Xunantunich

Watch the sunset. The light fades quickly after 17:42, so stay until the last moments of daylight to see the silhouette of the ruins against the darkening sky.

  4. 18:42

Walk back down to Succotz and take the ferry back. Check the route for the next steps as you head into town for dinner.

Local tip

The main Visitor Center is closed indefinitely. Look for the small Education Center with info boards and the Visitor Center with stelae further up the hill.
