Timeline
08:30
Arrive at Caracol as it opens. The site is massive, once home to 140,000 people, so starting early helps you beat the heat and the crowds while the light is still soft. Make your way toward Ca'ana, the 'place of the sky,' which is one of the biggest and most massive temples in the Mayan world.
10:00
Take a break for lunch or a snack at the site facilities or nearby vendors. Since Caracol is remote, bring water and pack a picnic if options are limited on-site. Use this time to rest after climbing the main temple.
10:30
Continue your exploration of the unexcavated sections. The feeling of being in a national park on a ruin is unique here because so much remains hidden under the jungle canopy. Look for smaller structures and stelae that tell the story of the city without the crowds.
Local tip
Caracol is often visited as part of a loop including Rio On Pools and Rio Frio Cave. If you have time, plan to stop at Rio On Pools for a swim after your ruins tour, but ensure you leave enough time to return to San Ignacio before dark.
Check before you go
- Check your route to Caracol in advance as it is remote and public transport is limited.
- Wear sturdy shoes for uneven terrain and bring plenty of water and insect repellent.
