Grab a strong espresso at Caffe Trieste. It is a North Beach landmark with excellent coffee and a local crowd. The café is open from 06:30, so you have plenty of time before the golden hour.

Walk up to Coit Tower. The climb takes about 43 minutes from the Asian Art Museum area, but from Caffe Trieste it is a short, steep ascent. You will reach the viewpoint just in time to see the city and bay bathed in the warm, low-angle light of the setting sun toward the WNW.
17:04
Head down to Vesuvio's for a nightcap. This historic bar is famous for its association with the Beat Generation and jazz. It is open until 02:00, making it a perfect spot to stay late and reflect on the view.
Local tip
The walk up to Coit Tower involves steep hills. Wear comfortable shoes. The golden light at 16:34 offers the best contrast against the blue bay and cityscape before the sun dips below the horizon.
