Timeline

  1. 16:19

    Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve

Walk the trails near Rancho de los Penasquitos. The historic house tours run Tu-Sa 09:00-17:00, so you can peek inside or just view the exterior as the sun begins to dip. The canyon scenery is at its most striking in the fading light.

  2. 17:04

    Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve

Find a quiet spot along the trails to watch the sun set toward the WSW. The golden light starting around 16:28 will have just faded, leaving a soft, dusky atmosphere in the preserve.

  3. 17:49

    Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve

Head back to the parking area or exit. Since there are no food or drink spots listed within the preserve, check the route to find a nearby restaurant or bar for dinner and a drink after dark.

Local tip

The preserve is free to enter, but the historic house tours have specific hours. Arriving before 17:00 ensures you can explore the interior if you wish, though the exterior and trails are accessible during park hours.
