Best time: 17:05About 90 min

Timeline

  1. 15:35

    Salk Institute of Biological Studies

Arrive at the Salk Institute courtyard. The unfinished concrete and symmetrical buildings create a serene frame for the western horizon. Walk the length of the courtyard to find the best vantage point looking out toward the ocean.

  2. 16:45

    Black's Beach

Walk 20 minutes NW down to Black’s Beach. The high cliffs offer a dramatic backdrop as you descend. Find a spot on the sand facing west to settle in for the final moments of daylight.

  3. 17:05

    Black's Beach

Watch the sun set toward the WSW. The light fades quickly from golden to deep blue over the water. Stay for the afterglow reflecting off the cliff faces.

Local tip

There is no food or drink available at the anchor or the viewing spot. Check the route for nearby options in La Jolla before you head up to the cliffs, as the area is remote and services are limited once you leave the main road.

Check before you go

  • The walk from the Salk Institute to Black’s Beach is steep and takes about 20 minutes each way. Wear sturdy shoes.
  • Black’s Beach is a nude beach in its southern section. Be respectful of the area and follow local signage.
  • Check the tide schedule. High tide can make the beach access difficult or unsafe.
