Timeline
15:07
Grab a "Kleiner Brauner" and a pastry at the terrace of Café Bazar. It is the perfect place to watch the city settle as the afternoon wears on.
15:32
Walk up to Schloss Hellbrunn. Enter the grounds and find a spot in the gardens facing west. The trick fountains are active in the summer, but in winter the stillness of the water features and the stone architecture are the main attraction. Stand next to the guide if you take a tour, otherwise you will get wet.
15:52
Watch the golden light hit the facade and the gardens. The sun sets toward the WSW, casting long shadows across the vast green spaces. This is the moment to appreciate the summer palace of the Archbishops before the light fades.
16:22
Head down to Sternbräu for a warm drink or a bite of regional fare. The wood-paneled restaurant and beer garden offer a cozy end to the evening.
Local tip
If you are visiting in July or August, the trick fountains run until 21:00, so you can time your visit to see them in action during golden light. In winter, the palace closes at 16:30, so arrive early.
