Timeline

  1. 07:00

    Untersberg

Take the Untersbergbahn cable car from Gartenau up to the Geiereck peak. The ride lifts you over 1,300 meters in just a few minutes. At the top, step out onto the viewing platform. The mountain sits on the border with Germany, offering clear, panoramic views of the Alps. It is best to go early to enjoy the space before the tour groups arrive.

  2. 08:30

    Untersberg

Walk the short path along the ridge. The air is crisp here. You can see the town of Salzburg far below in the distance. The walk is gentle and the views are wide open. Check the route for any closures before you head up.

  3. 10:00

    Untersberg

Head back down the cable car. The descent is just as fast as the ascent. Once back in Gartenau, the mountain base offers a quiet place to rest your legs. There are no shops or cafes listed at the peak or in the immediate vicinity for a snack, so bring water and a light meal with you from Salzburg.

Local tip

The cable car runs regularly, but schedules can change with the season. Check the route and current times before you go. Since there are no food or drink options at the top, plan to eat in Salzburg before you depart or bring a packed lunch.

Check before you go

  • Check the cable car schedule for the day you plan to visit.
  • Bring water and snacks as there are no shops at the Geiereck peak.
  • Wear warm layers as it is significantly cooler at 1,776 meters than in the city.
