Skip the museum crowds and catch the last warm light on the ancient walls.

Best time: 17:03About 45 min

Timeline

  1. 16:28

    Old Bridge Gelateria

Grab a cheap gelato from Old Bridge Gelateria. It sits just across the street from the Vatican City wall, making it the perfect fuel for a short walk. The shop is open until 23:00, so you will have no trouble finding it open.

  2. 16:43

    The Vatican Museum

Walk 4 minutes east to the Vatican Museum entrance area. You do not need to go inside. Instead, use this time to find a quiet spot along the exterior wall or the nearby St. Peter's Gallery plaza to watch the light change. The museum is open until 18:00, but you are just using the exterior space.

  3. 17:03

    The Vatican Museum

Stand near the wall facing west. The sun sets at 17:03, casting a golden glow over the Vatican structures and the city beyond. This is the peak moment of the experience.

  4. 17:18

    Be.Re

Walk 4 minutes to Be.Re for a craft beer to unwind. It is a pub with a good selection on tap and some snacks like Trapizzino. It is open until 02:00, so it is a safe and cozy end to the evening.

Local tip

The museum ticket office closes at 16:00, but since you are only viewing the exterior, this does not affect your plan. The sunset is toward the WSW, so position yourself to face that direction for the best view.
