Timeline

  1. 14:54

    National Museum of Iceland

Walk into the National Museum of Iceland right when it opens at 10:00. The quietest time to explore the settlement exhibits is early, before the day trips arrive. Take your time with the history of the nation from the first settlers to today.

  2. 17:24

    Kaffihús Vesturbæjar

Walk 11 minutes to Kaffihús Vesturbæjar for a coffee and a light lunch. It is a cosy spot with mostly local clientele and free wifi, offering a calm break from the museum crowds. The cafe is open from 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 on weekends.

  3. 18:24

    The Culture House

Walk 16 minutes northeast to The Culture House. This former national library now hosts rotating exhibitions. The building itself is a historic landmark, and being near the anchor makes it a easy stop on your way toward the water.

  4. 19:54

    Sun Voyager

Walk 23 minutes east-northeast to the Sun Voyager sculpture. Arrive just as the golden light begins at 19:54. The steel frame of the dreamboat points toward the horizon, and the low evening sun reflects beautifully off the harbour water and the sculpture itself.

Local tip

The walk from the museum to the harbour is flat and straightforward. If you prefer a quicker route between the museum and the Culture House, you can cut through the University of Iceland campus grounds.
