Golden Hour on the Heath

Rømø’s open skies turn the heath into a sea of amber light just before the sun dips below the horizon. This short loop lets you grab a sweet treat, climb to the island’s highest point for the view, and finish with a warm drink as the light fades.

Timeline

  1. 15:33

    Atzen Honning Rømø

Pick up a jar of local honey from Atzen Honning Rømø. It is a small shop near the island center, so this is a quick stop to fuel up before the climb.

  2. 15:58

    Høstbjerg

Climb the dunes to Høstbjerg. It is the highest point on Rømø at 19 meters. The walk up is short but steep. Once at the top, turn your back to the rising sun (or face west as the day progresses) and look out over the heathlands. On a clear day, you can see Esbjerg to the north and the island of Sylt to the south.

  3. 16:28

    Høstbjerg

Stay at Høstbjerg for the moment. The sun sets toward the southwest, casting long shadows across the landscape. This is the peak of the golden light window.

  4. 16:48

    Komandørgarden Rømø

Walk down to Komandørgarden Rømø to end your evening. This museum is located northeast of the hill. It is a quiet place to reflect on the day’s light and history, and it provides a calm conclusion to the active climb.

Local tip

The climb to Høstbjerg is short but can be tricky in wind or wet conditions. Wear sturdy shoes. The golden light window is tight, so get to the top before the sun touches the horizon.
