Timeline
16:06
Walk the trails of Washington Park. The grounds are large enough to wander for a bit, letting the evening air settle before the main event.
16:15
Arrive at the Oregon Zoo. Head to the viewing spot on the eastern side. The sun sets toward the WSW, offering a clear view of the horizon from this elevated position. The zoo grounds remain open one hour after closing, so the atmosphere is quiet and spacious.
16:53
Watch the sunset. The golden light fades as the sun dips below the horizon.
17:23
Walk 16 minutes to Huber’s. As Portland’s oldest restaurant, it is a perfect place to end the evening with a turkey dinner or a Spanish coffee poured tableside. It is open until 22:00 on weekdays and 23:00 on weekends.
Local tip
The zoo grounds stay open for an hour after the last admission, giving you plenty of time to linger after the sun goes down.
Check before you go
- Huber’s is closed on Mondays. Check if your visit falls on a Monday and choose another spot like Aviary Cafe (open 10:00-18:00) or Laughing Planet (open 11:00-22:00).
- The Oregon Zoo closes at 16:00 in winter. You must enter before closing to stay for the sunset, as the grounds remain open one hour after close.
