Forest Park Golden Hour

Catch the last warm light of the day in the city's vast urban forest.

Best time: sunsetAbout 90 min

Timeline

  1. 16:08

Check the route to Forest Park and arrive at the trailhead. The park opens at 05:00, so you have plenty of time before the sun sets.

  2. 16:38

Find a quiet clearing or a bench along one of the hiking trails. There are no designated snack shops within the park boundaries, so bring a small treat or drink with you. Wait here as the light begins to shift.

  3. 16:53

Watch the sun dip below the horizon. On January 15 it sets toward the WSW by 16:53, in April and July toward the WNW by 19:57 and 20:57 respectively, and in October toward the WSW by 18:25. The golden light preceding this moment lasts for about 40 minutes.

  4. 17:23

Stay until the light fades completely. The park closes at 22:00, so you can remain inside safely as the evening sets in. Use this time to reflect on the quiet of the forest before heading back.
