Timeline
14:24
Start the climb to the High Place of Sacrifice. This is a steep trek, and the round trip generally takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, so give yourself plenty of time to reach the top before the light changes.
16:09
Settle in at the top. The site contains elaborate rock altars, and from here you can view much of Petra from above. The scenery is beautiful, though it can get cold and windy up there, so bring a layer.
16:24
Watch the golden light hit the rock carvings. At 16:24, the sun is setting toward the WSW, casting a warm glow over the landscape. This is the perfect moment to take in the view before the light fades.
16:54
Begin the descent. The trek down the back side of the mountain reveals many interesting tombs and carvings that might be missed by the average tourist. Since not many people go through the back route, you can enjoy a quieter walk down.
Local tip
