Timeline
06:15
Arrive at the Great Temple plaza. The complex is large, so give yourself time to find a quiet spot on the southern side where the morning light will first hit the ancient columns. The air is still and the site is empty.
06:35
Watch the sunrise. The sun rises in the east, but the open courtyard of the Great Temple catches the early glow. The stone turns from grey to warm gold. This is the quietest time to feel the scale of the Nabataean architecture.
06:50
Walk northwest for 4 minutes to the Qasr al-Bint. This well-preserved temple faces the Wadi Musa. Stand in the open space between the Great Temple and this structure. The low morning light casts long shadows that highlight the intricate carvings on the temple facade.
07:05
Stay at the Qasr al-Bint for the golden light. The sun is now fully up and the light is bright and clear. This is the perfect moment to take photos of the temple against the blue sky. The view towards the Wadi Musa is open and unobstructed.
07:35
Return to the Great Temple area. By now, the site is open for visitors and small vendors may be setting up. Look for any nearby stalls or the visitor center entrance to grab a coffee or a simple breakfast. The early start is worth it for the silence you just experienced.
Local tip
The site opens at sunrise. Arrive early to avoid the tour groups that arrive later in the morning. Wear warm layers as the desert morning can be cold before the sun gets high.
