Timeline

  1. 16:52

Arrive near the DMZ perimeter. Since there are no food or drink shops listed in the immediate vicinity, bring your own water and snacks. Check the route from Seoul or your starting point well in advance, as access is strictly controlled.

  2. 17:22

    Taesong-dong

Position yourself at a safe, legal viewing point along the route to the JSA. Taesong-dong is visible from the South side as you pass by. Look for the 100 m flagpole and the cluster of houses under military guard. The sun sets toward the WSW, so angle your view to catch the final light hitting the village.

  3. 17:37

The moment arrives. At sunset, the sky turns orange and pink, casting long shadows over the fields and the flagpole. The contrast between the vibrant sky and the stark, guarded village creates a powerful visual. Stay quiet and observe the boundary line.

  4. 18:07

After the light fades, take time to reflect on the history of the division. Continue your journey back toward Seoul or to your next destination, keeping in mind that photography may be restricted in certain zones.

Local tip

Entry into Taesong-dong is not permitted. You will only pass by on your way to the JSA from the South side. Ensure you have all necessary permits and check the route details before traveling.
