Timeline
17:15
Grab a coffee and a sweet treat at Los Portales Pachuca. The modern interior is a nice warm-up before the chill sets in. Check that they open at 09:00 on Tuesdays through Saturdays, or 10:00 on Mondays and Sundays.
17:45
Walk to Plaza Juárez. Find the spot near the Benito Juarez statue where the municipal theater frames the square. The sun is low and casting long shadows toward the WSW, hitting the stone facades just right. You have thirty minutes to watch the light shift before the sun dips below the horizon.
18:30
Head to the monumental clock in the square to pick up a Paste from Pastes 'Real de Plateros'. These are simple, grab-and-go pastries with meat or chorizo. The shop is open until 20:00, so you will have time to buy one and eat it outside while the sky turns dark.
19:00
End the night at Sotero for dinner. This upscale spot serves regional Mexican cuisine with creative cocktails. Try the rabbit or the octopus. Note that the lunch/dinner service runs from 14:00 to 18:00, so if you are aiming for the January sunset at 18:15, you might be cutting it close or they may be closing. If Sotero is closed, check the route to Benji's, which is open until 20:00 and serves specialty burgers on homemade buns.
Local tip
The walk from Los Portales to the Plaza is short, but the square can get windy at sunset. Bring a light layer.
