Timeline

  1. 13:00

    Magdalen College

Enter Magdalen College through the main gate. The high tower is a landmark, but the real draw is the deer park and the Gothic chapel. Arriving just before 1 PM helps you beat the larger tour groups that often arrive mid-afternoon. The grounds are open until 6 PM in the warmer months, but the late afternoon light is when the stone glows.

  2. 13:45

    The Grand Cafe

Walk down to The Grand Cafe for afternoon tea. It is a short three-minute walk from the college. For £16.50 you get sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and handmade chocolate. It is the perfect place to recharge after seeing the college, and the atmosphere is relaxed enough to enjoy the late afternoon calm.

  3. 14:30

    Angel and Greyhound Meadow

Stroll east across Magdalen Bridge to Angel and Greyhound Meadow. This flood-meadow adjoins the River Cherwell and sits directly opposite the college. In the late afternoon, especially around the golden light hour in spring, the meadow offers a peaceful view of the river and the college towers from a distance. It is a quiet spot to sit and watch the light change on the water.

Local tip

The college is closed 22–24 June, so check the opening hours if you are visiting in late June. The meadow is open to the public, but the college grounds require a ticket.
