North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve
Drive up to the North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve entrance. Arrive an hour before sunrise to find parking and let your eyes adjust to the dark. The reserve is open for early morning access, but check local signage for any seasonal closures or specific entry rules.

Walk the 41 minutes from the main reserve area to the North Table Mountain Preserve viewpoint. This is a steady climb, so take your time. Position yourself facing west to watch the horizon brighten as the sun begins to crest.

Watch the sunrise. The sun sets toward the WSW, meaning it rises in the ENE, but the golden light will illuminate the western slopes and the valley below. Stay here for the full effect of the light changing across the landscape.

North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve
Head back down to the base of the mountain. Oroville does not have listed food or drink shops in the immediate vicinity for early morning, so plan to drive into town for breakfast once the sun is fully up and shops open. Check local business hours for the nearest cafe or diner.
Local tip
The walk to the preserve is long (41 minutes). Bring a headlamp if you are arriving before sunrise. Temperatures can be cold and windy on the table top in January.
Check before you go
- Verify if the reserve requires a reservation or has specific early entry permits.
