Stop at The Hancock, a student-focused café just a 4-minute walk from Hatton. The jukeboxes and pool tables are a good warm-up before the evening gets going. It is open until 24:00.

Return to Hatton Gallery for the golden light and sunset. The 15 January sunset is at 16:09, casting a warm glow over the modern redevelopment. Stay as the sky turns dark.

Walk 12 minutes west to Leazes Park. It is Newcastle’s oldest park, opened in 1873. The evening air is crisp, and the lake reflects the last light. This is a Grade II listed space with plenty of room to stretch your legs.
17:24
End the night at The Trent House, a friendly pub just a 6-minute walk from the park. It is famous for its free jukebox playing soul and rock classics. It serves real ales and spirits until 23:00 on weekdays.
Local tip
The Trent House gets heaving when Newcastle United play at home. If you prefer a quieter pint, try Bacchus, which is a 14-minute walk away and has ocean liner decor.
