Timeline

  1. 14:12

    CSIRO Australia Telescope

Drive 22.5 km from Narrabri via Newell Highway southbound. At the roundabout in Narrabri West turn right onto Mooloobar St, turn right onto Baranbar St then left onto Goobar St. Pass Bukhai Street on the right and continue ahead as Yarrie Lake Road. Cross the Bohena Creek bridge and the facility is on the right hand side. Arrive early to switch off all mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and radio transmitters/receivers as they will interfere with the telescope array.

  2. 17:12

    CSIRO Australia Telescope

Find a quiet spot near the six radio telescope antennas. The visitor center has interactive displays and a theatrette if you need to pass the time before the sky changes. Keep your devices away from the array.

  3. 17:42

    CSIRO Australia Telescope

Watch the sun set toward the W. The golden light begins about 17:10, leading into the sunset at 17:42. The radio telescopes stand silent against the darkening sky.

  4. 19:12

    CSIRO Australia Telescope

Head back to Narrabri for dinner. Check the route for the drive north. The telescope facility closes at 17:00, so you will have left well before closing if you timed this correctly, but ensure you have finished your viewing before the gates close.

Local tip

The telescope array is sensitive to radio signals. You must switch off your devices completely, not just silence them.
