    Yoshikien Garden

Head to Yoshikien Garden early. It is free and offers a clear view of the mountain to the east. The garden is quiet in the late afternoon, giving you time to find a spot that frames Mount Wakakusa against the sky.

  2. 16:38

    Senjuan Yoshimune

Walk seven minutes to Senjuan Yoshimune for a traditional snack. Order warabimochi or shaved ice in the tatami-matted tea room. This is a gentle way to pass the time before the main event.

  3. 17:08

    Yoshikien Garden

Return to Yoshikien Garden to watch the sunset. On 15 January the sun sets at 17:08 toward the WSW. The garden’s layout allows you to see the light fade over Mount Wakakusa without the crowds found at larger parks.

  4. 17:53

    Totogin

Walk 13 minutes to Totogin for dinner. This conveyor-belt sushi restaurant is open until 22:00. The sushi is handmade and fresh. Watch the plates as they cycle by and check the menu carefully since prices vary by plate.

  5. 18:38

    Kuramoto Hoshuku

End the night at Kuramoto Hoshuku. This drop-by spot operated by Nara Toyosawa brewery is open until 21:00. Order a sake test set of three small glasses or a snack with sake or beer.
