Grab a coffee or pastry from a local shop in town before heading north. Check opening hours to ensure they are open early enough for your departure.
15:37
Arrive at Great Point Light. Park and walk up to the viewing area. The lighthouse stands high above the beaches, offering a clear view of the western horizon.
15:52
Watch the golden light hit the water. The sun sets toward the WSW in winter, WNW in spring and summer, and due West in autumn. The light will turn the dunes and ocean a warm, soft color.
16:22
Stay for the last moments of light as the sky shifts to blue. Then, check the route back to your car or accommodation. The area is remote, so plan your return carefully.
Local tip
Great Point is at the northern tip of the island. Roads can be rough, and cell service may be spotty. Bring a flashlight for the walk back if it gets dark.
Check before you go
- Check the sunrise/sunset times for your specific date. Golden light starts about 40 minutes before sunset.
- If visiting in winter (January), it gets dark early (16:35 sunset). In summer (July), it stays light late (20:12 sunset).
- Ensure your vehicle is suitable for the roads leading to Great Point.
