Timeline
06:20
Stand in the temple grounds before the crowds arrive. The silence here is rare, and the old wooden structures look stark against the early morning light.
07:00
Watch the sunrise. The temple faces west, offering a clear view of the sun cresting the horizon toward the WSW.
07:30
Walk five minutes ESE to the Ōsu Shopping Arcade. The covered streets are just opening up, giving you a chance to browse the mom-and-pop stores before the midday rush.
07:45
Stop at the café inside the arcade for a warm drink or shaved ice. It opens at 12:00 on weekdays, so for an early start, check if they have pre-opening hours or simply enjoy the atmosphere of the arcade while waiting for the city to fully wake up. Alternatively, grab a quick coffee from a nearby open shop in the arcade.
Local tip
The temple grounds are best visited early. The shopping arcade is vast, so take your time wandering the different lanes.
Check before you go
- Temple hours may vary; check locally for opening times.
- Café 甘味処 柴ふく opens at 12:00 on weekdays. If you arrive before then, the arcade is still open for browsing.
