Timeline

  1. 19:16

    Bar Facal

Grab a coffee and a light bite at Bar Facal. It is a fairly touristy café and restaurant next to the Fuente de Candados with a varied menu. This is a good spot to start before the walk.

  2. 19:24

Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda

Walk to the Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda. The museums are in Palacio Heber Jackson and feature gaucho culture objects from the 19th century as well as numismatic exhibits. The walk from Bar Facal is about 8 minutes, but you need to allow time to transition to the next leg.

  3. 19:46

    Parque Rodó

Head to Parque Rodó. This is the main park of southern Montevideo, named after the writer José Enrique Rodó. It is a 42-minute walk from the Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda, but given the proximity of the anchor and the park in the broader city layout, you will be moving through the historic center towards the south. Arrive here to find a quiet spot in the park or near the memorial dedicated to Rodó.

  4. 20:01

    Parque Rodó

Watch the sunset. On 15 January, the sun sets at 20:01 toward the WSW. The golden light starts around 19:24. Parque Rodó offers a pleasant vantage point to see the light fade over the city.

  5. 20:21

    Baar Fun Fun

End the evening at Baar Fun Fun. This classic tango bar is one of the oldest in Montevideo, 100 years old. Many famous tango artists have played here. It is a fitting end to a cultural evening in the city.

Local tip

The walk from the Museo del Gaucho y de la Moneda to Parque Rodó is quite long (42 minutes). If you prefer a shorter walk, you might consider starting directly at a nearby café in the Ciudad Vieja area and walking south to the park, but the sequence above ensures you see the key museum before the light fades. Check the route for the walk to Parque Rodó.
