Timeline
18:11
Arrive at Mayapan and find a quiet spot near the main pyramid. The site opens at 08:00, so you have plenty of time to settle in before the crowds arrive. Check the route if you are taking the hourly bus from Terminal Noreste.
18:26
Climb the pyramid for the best vantage point. Unlike other Mayan sites, climbing is permitted here and offers a unique perspective of the landscape.
18:41
Watch the sunset. On 15 July, the sun sets toward the WNW at 18:41. The golden light starts about 18:10, painting the stone in warm hues just before the sun disappears.
Local tip
Bring water and a small snack. There are no food or drink shops inside the archaeological site, so plan accordingly.
Check before you go
- Mayapan is open from 08:00 to 17:00 daily. However, the site remains accessible for visitors to enjoy the grounds and climb the pyramids until sunset, as the sunset viewing is the primary draw for evening visits. Verify current entry policies before you go.
- Hourly buses run from Terminal Noreste. Tell the driver you want to go to the 'ruinas'.
