Timeline
16:47
Arrive at Yuushien Garden and buy a local snack or drink to enjoy while you wait. The garden opens at 08:30, so it is fully accessible well before sunset.
17:17
Find a spot in the garden facing west. Watch the sun set toward the WSW. In winter (January), the sun sets at 17:17. In spring (April), it sets at 18:39 toward the WNW. In summer (July), the latest sunset is 19:23. In autumn (October), it sets at 17:32 toward the west. The golden light begins roughly 40 minutes before sunset, offering a softer glow for viewing.
17:32
Stay a while longer to let the colors fade. The garden remains open until 17:30 in winter, but closes earlier in other seasons relative to the sunset time, so check the specific closing time for your visit date if you plan to linger after dark. The garden is on Daikonjima island, accessible by Ichibata bus from Matsue Station or Shinjiko Onsen station.
Local tip
The garden is famous for its 250 kinds of peonies, though their bloom depends on the season. Use the Ichibata bus to get there; it takes about 25 minutes and costs ¥700.
