Washington Square Park: A Quiet Afternoon Stroll

Escape the bustle of the Village for a slow walk through history and greenery.

Best time: noneAbout 90 min

Timeline

  1. 14:00

    Washington Square Park

Start at the north side of Washington Square Park. Admire the triumphal arch and take in the view of the surrounding buildings. This is the heart of the Village, where students and locals mix.

  2. 14:15

    Joe's Pizza

Walk six minutes south to Joe's Pizza. Order a classic New York slice. The service is quick, but the place is tiny, so take your slice outside to eat on the sidewalk.

  3. 14:40

    Hangman's Elm

Head northwest for three minutes to Hangman's Elm. This historic English elm stands at the park's northwest corner. It is a quiet spot to rest and reflect on the park's long history.

  4. 15:05

    Stonewall Inn

Walk eight minutes to the Stonewall Inn. Step inside this icon of the worldwide gay community. The building has a rich history dating back to the 1969 riots, even if the current incarnation is not the original structure.

Local tip

The park is busiest during school terms in warmer months. Afternoon is a good time to avoid the heaviest student crowds.
