Arrive at Big Brother Mouse right when it opens. The organization welcomes tourists to help with English conversation and reading practice. It is a worthwhile stop that supports literacy in young adults and children. You can hang out, chat with locals, and consider buying some of their published books to take as gifts if you travel through Laos.
09:45
Walk one minute to Nang Tao for lunch. This is an excellent stop for authentic Lao cuisine. The larb here was a favorite in the area. Most staff do not speak English, but there is one fellow who does and you can point at the menu. The price is reasonable at around 35,000 kip.
10:30
Take an 11-minute walk southwest to Phou Si Hill. The hill dominates the city and offers a great view of the whole area from the summit. There are trails from both sides of the hill, including one just across the road from the Royal Palace. It is a quiet time to enjoy the view before the afternoon crowds arrive.
Local tip
Big Brother Mouse opens at 09:00. Nang Tao is open from 07:00, so you will have plenty of time for lunch. Phou Si Hill is accessible all day, but the morning light is best for the initial climb.
