Timeline
10:00
Arrive at the Charles Dickens Museum right when it opens. The building is the former home of the writer, exhibiting his writings, paintings, furniture, and other items. Being there at 10:00 helps you beat the crowds and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of his study.
10:45
Walk 11 minutes to Gay’s the Word. As the leading gay-related bookshop in Britain, it has been a landmark of literary and activist history since 1979. Browse the shelves for titles on LGBT rights and culture. It is open from 10:00, so you will have plenty of time to look around.
11:15
Head to Leather Lane Market, just a 10-minute walk away. While it is not much about leather these days, it is worth a visit for cheap finds in clothing, electrical goods, and toiletries. You can also grab a snack here if you prefer something casual before moving on. Remember it closes at 15:00, so keep an eye on the time.
11:45
End your walk at The Lamb, a beautifully preserved Victorian pub just 3 minutes from the market. It attracts many young and old patrons with its classic ales and great food. If you arrive before 5 PM, you can avoid the crowd that builds up later in the day. It is open from noon, so you can settle in for a drink or a meal.
Local tip
The museum is closed on Tuesdays. The Lamb gets crowded after 5 PM, so aim for an earlier visit if you want a seat. Leather Lane Market closes at 15:00, so do not linger too long there if you want to finish your day at the pub.
