Timeline
17:04
Park and walk the West trail up the mountain. It is fairly easy and takes about an hour to reach the top, giving you plenty of time to settle in.
18:19
Stand at the peak. The view of the Arkansas River and surrounding country is wide open. The sun is setting toward the west, casting long shadows and turning the landscape gold.
18:34
Watch the sun dip below the horizon. The golden light fades quickly, marking the end of the day.
19:04
Descend the trail. The light is gone, but the park is quiet. Check the route for your drive back to town for dinner and a drink.
Local tip
The West trail is the best bet if you want a manageable hike that still gets you to the top in time for the view. The East trail is much steeper and might make you late for the sunset if you are not used to steep climbs.
Check before you go
- The park is open, but check the route for your drive back to town after dark.
