Enter the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos as it opens at 10:00. The early hour means shorter lines and a peaceful atmosphere to admire the Manueline architecture before the day’s visitors arrive.

Walk five minutes to Pastéis de Belém for a break. Order the famous pastries fresh from the oven with sugar and cinnamon. The shop is open from 08:00, so it will be ready for your mid-morning snack.
17:52
Stroll 16 minutes north to the Ajuda Botanical Gardens. This historic garden offers a serene, tree-lined escape just a short walk from the monastery. It is one of the oldest gardens in Europe and provides a quiet space to reflect.

Statue to Afonso de Albuquerque
End your walk at the Statue to Afonso de Albuquerque. Located just nine minutes from the gardens, this massive statue looks out to sea in front of the Presidential Palace. Time your arrival for the golden light starting around 18:22 to see the monument bathed in warm, late-afternoon sun.
Local tip
Tickets for the monastery are sold at the neighbouring archaeological museum, not at the entrance. Arriving at 10:00 helps you avoid the peak queues that form later in the day.
Check before you go
- The monastery is closed on 1 May, 13 Jun, and 25 Dec. Check if your date falls on one of these holidays.
- Last entry to the monastery is 30 minutes before closing (17:30 in October).
- Pastéis de Belém is open daily from 08:00 to 23:00.
