Timeline
16:15
Arrive at León Viejo to beat the heat and secure a good viewing spot. The site opens at 08:00, so you have plenty of time to explore the Calle Real and the Plaza before the light changes. Check the route for transport from León city to Puerto Momotombo.
18:15
Stand at the edge of the ruins as the sun sets toward the WNW. The golden light from 17:45 will wash over the stone foundations, and by 18:15 the sky will darken, highlighting the silhouette of the volcano against the twilight.
19:00
Stay for the post-sunset ambiance. The site closes at 17:00, but since the moment is sunset at 18:15, you should have already exited or arranged access. Note that the standard visiting hours are Tu-Su 08:00-17:00, so verify if evening access is permitted on your specific visit date or if you are concluding your tour just before closing. If the site is closed, head to the nearest local bar in León city for a drink.
Local tip
The guided tour is included in the entrance fee and is excellent for understanding the layout. Since the site closes at 17:00 and sunset is at 18:15 in July, this plan assumes you are visiting on a date where evening access is arranged or you are timing your departure to catch the very last light before closing. If strict 17:00 closing applies, consider shifting this to an early morning visit for sunrise (05:28) instead.
