Grab a cake at Riquet. The copper elephant heads guard the entrance to this 1908 café, where the interior has been restored to its original glory. It is the perfect spot to settle in before the light shifts.

Walk to the Gewandhaus. Mendelssohn’s orchestra still plays in this new hall. Look through the windows from Augustusplatz to see the huge painting by Sighard Gille inside.
15:34
Watch the golden light hit the Augustusplatz façade. The sun sets toward the SW, casting a warm glow on the building’s exterior as you stand outside.
15:54
End the evening at Auerbachs Keller. This medieval pub has been operating since 1525. The barrel cellar is usually reserved for private parties, but the main hall is open for drinks.
Local tip
The golden light period is short in winter. Get to the Gewandhaus windows with enough time to find the best angle before the sun dips below the horizon.
