Timeline

  1. 09:00

Mount Greylock State Reservation Visitors' Center

Arrive at the Visitors' Center to grab a trail map and orient yourself. The exhibits on natural and cultural history are best enjoyed early, before the midday crowds arrive. Take the short trail through the meadow for some quiet bird watching before the day heats up.

  2. 10:00

    Mount Greylock State Reservation

Head up to the summit area. Walk from the Visitor Center to the main reservation grounds. Bascom Lodge, built from local materials in the late 1930s, stands at the summit. It is a good spot to rest and take in the views of the sub-alpine forest that makes this area unique.

  3. 11:00

Mount Greylock State Reservation Visitors' Center

Return to the Visitors' Center area for a relaxed lunch or snack. Since there are no food or drink shops listed in the immediate vicinity, bring your own provisions. Use the time to review your map and decide if you want to extend your hike on the 70 miles of trails available.

Local tip

The Visitor Center is your best base for orientation. If you plan to hike, remember that the area is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Natural Resources and features five lean-to shelters for backpacking if you stay longer.
