Grab a matcha latte and a sweet bun at Junsei Nanzenji. It is just a four-minute walk from the temple entrance, making it the perfect warm-up before you head inside. The shop is open until 21:30, so you will have plenty of time.
15:44
Enter Nanzenji Temple. Wander past the distinctive two-story Sanmon gate and along the Meiji-era aqueduct. The stone path and the quiet atmosphere of the larger complex offer a peaceful contrast to the busier parts of Kyoto. The temple closes at 17:00 in winter, so you have exactly enough time to explore before the light fades.
16:29
Stand by the aqueduct as the golden light hits the stone. The setting sun casts long shadows across the water and the ancient bricks, creating a scene that feels timeless. This is the moment to pause and take in the view before the evening chill sets in.
16:59
End your walk with a browse at 椛, an art shop located a thirteen-minute walk from the temple. It is open until 18:00, allowing you to pick up a small keepsake or simply enjoy the quiet atmosphere as the daylight fades completely.
Local tip
The temple grounds are free to walk around, but you must pay to enter the main buildings. Bring cash for the bakery and the art shop, as some local spots do not accept cards.
