Golden Hour at Hidden Valley

Catch the last light on the sandstone before it fades.

Best time: 15 JanuaryAbout 90 min

Timeline

  1. 17:18

Arrive at Mirima National Park. The park is open 24/7 and free to walk into from the north side of Victoria Hwy. Find a spot along the gravel road past the gated service road opposite Hibiscus Drive to start your walk. This is a good time to stretch your legs and get oriented in the bushland before the light changes.

  2. 17:33

    Mirima National Park

Walk the 0.5 to 4 km trails toward the "Hidden Valley". These striking sandstone formations are often described as a miniature version of the Bungle Bungles. With the sun setting toward the WSW, the western-facing rock faces will begin to glow. Take your time exploring the unmarked trails winding around the rocks and boab trees.

  3. 18:03

    Mirima National Park

Watch the sunset. At 18:03, the sun dips below the horizon. The golden light that started at 17:32 will have warmed the sandstone to a deep orange-red. Stay here for a moment as the light fades and the park transitions into evening.

  4. 18:33

    Pindan Park

End your walk at Pindan Park. It is a short 14-minute walk west from the anchor. This is a good place to sit, reflect on the day, and let the quiet of the Kimberley night settle in.

Local tip

The park is free to enter from the north side of Victoria Hwy. Check the route if you need specific directions to the gated service road opposite Hibiscus Drive.
