Timeline
16:20
Start with a warm coffee at Lamee Coffee. It is open early and offers a calm spot to prepare for the climb. The café is just an eight-minute walk from the landmark.
16:30
Walk up to Swayambhunath. The 2.6 km route from Thamel is the standard way in, but if you are already nearby, follow the signs up the hill. The stupa and its surrounding Buddhist and Hindu iconography come into view as you ascend.
17:30
Stand at the stupa as the sun sets toward the WSW. The golden light starts about 34 minutes before this moment, giving the white dome a warm glow. This is the peak viewing time for the sunset.
18:15
End the evening at the Garden of Dreams. This walled garden is peaceful and beautifully renovated. It is a 40-minute walk east from the stupa, leading you back toward the city center near the former Royal Palace.
Local tip
The walk from the stupa to the Garden of Dreams is long. Check the route for transport options if you prefer not to walk the full 40 minutes. The stupa entry fee is Rs200 for a single entry.
