Timeline

  1. 09:00

    Sveti Primož nad Kamnikom

Begin your hike from the valley floor. The trail from the settlement towards Praprotno and up the road to the Alp is about an hour and a half long. Arriving by mid-morning ensures you catch the church before it gets busy and the light is bright enough to appreciate the Gothic Revival frescos dating back to 1504.

  2. 10:30

Check the route for a nearby spot in Stahovica or Črna to grab a coffee or a light snack. The church sits halfway up to Velika planina, so you will want to refuel before or after your time at the top depending on your energy levels.

  3. 11:00

    Sveti Primož nad Kamnikom

Spend time inside the church viewing the main fresco. If the weather is clear, step outside to take in the view. On a good day, you can see all the way to Ljubljana from this plain above Stahovica.

Local tip

The hike takes about 1 hr 30 min from the valley. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The view towards Ljubljana is weather dependent, so check the forecast before you go.

Check before you go

  • The hike is roughly 1.5 hours each way. Start early to avoid afternoon clouds that might obscure the view.
  • There are no food shops listed at the church itself, so plan to buy supplies in Stahovica or Črna before you start the walk.
