Timeline

  1. 08:00

    Nam Heong Coffee Shop

Grab a cup of Ipoh White Coffee and a fresh egg tart. Nam Heong Coffee Shop is the originator of the famous drink, and the pastries are baked on-site. It is a local favorite for breakfast, so you will be in good company.

  2. 08:25

    Han Chin Pet Soo

Walk to Han Chin Pet Soo. This painstakingly restored Hakka Miners' Club documents the lives of tin miners who came to Perak with cash to spend. The exhibits cover opium smoking, gambling, and prostitution through curated antiques, alongside the history of tin mining with old equipment and photographs of the big towkays. Note that the museum is appointment only and closed on Mondays, so ensure your visit is scheduled.

  3. 09:00

    Tong Sui Kai

Head to Tong Sui Kai for a dessert stop. This long stretch of about 50 inexpensive hawker stalls is best known for its dessert selection. You will find Rojak, Ais Kacang, and local specialty mixed fruit stalls. It is a great place to cool down and try a variety of sweet treats.

Local tip

If you prefer to avoid the large tour groups that flock to Foh San Restaurant for dim sum, Restoran Yoke Fook Moon on 'Dim Sum Street' offers freshly steamed char siew baos with slightly bigger portions and fewer crowds. However, for this specific itinerary, Nam Heong provides the iconic coffee experience closer to your starting time.

Check before you go

  • Han Chin Pet Soo is appointment only and closed on Mondays. You must arrange an appointment in advance.
  • Tong Sui Kai stalls operate from 5PM to 1AM depending on the stall, but many dessert stalls open earlier. Since this is a daytime plan starting at 08:00, verify if the specific dessert stalls you want are open at that hour, as some may not start until later in the day. If they are closed, consider Restoran Kong Heng (open 08:00-16:30) or Sin Meng Kee Products (open 06:30-17:00) as alternatives for food or snacks.
