Find a local café or shop in Ilulissat for a hot drink or snack. The city has limited options, so check opening hours as they may close early in October. You need to be ready to head out before the golden light begins.

Walk toward the waterfront area where the fjord meets the town. The light is shifting now, turning the water and ice a soft gold. Keep an eye on the sky toward the WSW.

Stand by the Ilulissat Ice Fjord as the sun dips below the horizon. The glacier, 35 km away, has been pushing icebergs into the fjord all day. At this moment, the setting sun reflects off the floating ice and the deep blue water. The sun sets toward the WSW, illuminating the barrier where the fjord narrows.
19:12
After the sun is gone, the golden light fades quickly. Head back toward the town center to warm up. The polar night is approaching, so darkness will fall completely within an hour.
Local tip
October is a transition month. The sun sets early, and the air gets cold quickly. Dress warmly for the walk along the fjord edge. Check local shop hours before you go, as some may have reduced schedules in the off-season.
