Timeline
16:00
Begin the hike up Tai Mo Shan. Aim to reach the area just below the summit weather station and military outpost well before the sun sets. The path is steep, so take your time and enjoy the views as you climb.
17:30
Position yourself at the viewing area. The summit is a restricted zone, but the path leading up offers expansive views. Watch the sky change color as the sun sets toward the WSW.
18:00
Witness the sunset. The light fades quickly after the sun goes down, so take a moment to absorb the evening atmosphere at the highest point in Hong Kong.
19:00
Start your descent. It is dark by now, so use a flashlight or headlamp. Walk carefully down the trail as you leave the mountain behind.
Local tip
There are no food or drink options on Tai Mo Shan itself. Bring water and snacks with you on the hike. After descending, check the route to find the nearest town for dinner.
Check before you go
- The summit area is a military outpost and weather station, so access is restricted. You can hike almost to the top but must stop before the fenced area.
- It gets dark quickly after sunset. Bring a reliable light source for the descent.
- Check the route for transport back from the mountain base.
