Timeline
15:01
Start the hike from Ngong Ping. This is the most common route and saves significant elevation gain compared to starting from Tung Chung Road. Make sure you are fully prepared for a hard climb, especially if it is summer.
17:31
Reach the summit. Find a clear spot facing west. The sun sets toward the WSW in winter, W in spring and autumn, and WNW in summer, so adjust your position slightly to keep the sun in view as it dips below the horizon.
18:01
Watch the sunset. The golden light begins roughly 30 to 40 minutes before the sun disappears. Stay for the full transition from bright orange to deep blue twilight.
Local tip
Check the route for the Ngong Ping cable car or bus if you are not driving. The climb back down is steep, so wear shoes with good grip.
Check before you go
- The climb is physically demanding. Bring water and layers for the wind at 934m.
- If you want to avoid the hike back down, consider staying overnight at the Ngong Ping hostel and waking up early for sunrise instead.
