Arrive at the Museum of Old and New Art before the sun breaks. The museum opens at 10AM, but for a sunrise experience, you need to be there early. Check the route from Brooke St Pier or Metrobus 42, 111, 117-122, X1-X3. The building itself is quite eccentric, and the views over the Derwent River are impressive even in the pre-dawn light.
05:50
Watch the sunrise. On 15 January, the sun rises at 05:50, setting toward the WSW. The golden light starts about 20:07, but for sunrise, you are looking at the horizon as the sky brightens. The museum has a decidedly adult feel, so enjoy the quiet contemplation.
06:50
Stay for breakfast or coffee at the on-site cafe. Once the sun is up and the museum is open, you can grab a bite. The cafe serves breakfast and coffee, perfect for warming up after the early morning chill. The museum is open Fri-Mon 10AM-5PM, so ensure you have booked in advance if you plan to explore the exhibits further.
Local tip
The Museum of Old and New Art has a decidedly adult feel, so may not be the ideal place for kids. For those who don't get it, there are impressive views over the Derwent River along with a cafe and Morilla Winery on site.
