Timeline

  1. 19:49

    Shot Tower

Climb the 259 wooden steps to the top of the Shot Tower. The view of the Derwent Estuary and countryside is exceptional as the day winds down.

  2. 20:49

    Shot Tower

Stand at the top of the tower to watch the sun set toward the WSW. The golden light starts about 20:07, painting the sandstone and water in warm hues before the sun disappears at 20:49.

  3. 21:19

    Shot Tower

Descend the stairs as the light fades. The tower closes at 5PM in winter, but remains open until 5PM in summer, so you have plenty of time to head out after dark.

Local tip

Check the route if you need transport back to your accommodation after the tower closes or if you prefer not to walk in the dark.

Check before you go

  • The Shot Tower is open Daily 9AM-5PM (in winter 9AM-4PM). Ensure you finish your climb and descent before closing time.
