Timeline

  1. 17:32

    Suisan

Pick up a package of fresh poke at Suisan. The shop is just a short walk from the gardens, and you can take your selection to the park across the street if you want a quick bite, but we are saving it for the view.

  2. 17:42

    Mokuola

Walk seven minutes north to Mokuola, the small public park connected by a pedestrian bridge. This is the perfect vantage point. Settle in with your poke and watch the sun drop toward the WSW.

  3. 18:12

    Hilo Bayfront Beach Park

After the sun dips below the horizon, take a twelve-minute walk west-southwest to Hilo Bayfront Beach Park. The light is fading, but the bayfront atmosphere is lively and the ocean breeze is cooling down.

  4. 18:37

    Coconut Grill

Head back toward the town center for dinner. Walk eleven minutes to the Coconut Grill. It is open until 21:00 on weekdays and 22:00 on weekends, so you have plenty of time to enjoy excellent entres like fresh fish dishes or the famous Naughty Hula Girl Mud Pie.

Local tip

Suisan sells poke by weight. If you prefer a seated meal over a picnic, The Hilo Bay Cafe is also just three minutes away and known for its local organic produce and mojitos.

Check before you go

  • Suisan has no listed hours, so arrive before the park gets crowded.
  • The Coconut Grill is closed Sunday through Thursday after 21:00 and Friday/Saturday after 22:00.
