Arrive at the Helsinki synagogue and find a spot on the steps or just outside the entrance. The sun sets toward the SW, but in the deep winter morning, the eastern exposure of the area offers a quiet, contemplative start. Wait in silence as the sky lightens from indigo to pale blue. The building’s facade begins to catch the first diffuse light.

Walk 10 minutes to Café Ekberg. It opens at 07:30 on weekdays and 09:00 on weekends. Since sunrise is at 09:09, you will arrive just as the café is opening its doors for the day. Order a coffee and a pastry to warm your hands. The interior is a historic institution, founded in 1852, offering a cozy refuge from the cold morning air.
