Golden Light at the Michel and an Elbe Sunset

    Hauptkirche St. Michaelis

    Start at the base of Hauptkirche St. Michaelis. Climb the 450 steps to the tower or take the elevator. At this time, you will have a clear view of the city bathed in the fading afternoon light before the sun dips below the horizon.

    Old Commercial Room

    Walk one minute to the Old Commercial Room for dinner. This historic restaurant (founded in 1795) is perfect for a late meal. Order fish dishes or labskaus, a Northern German specialty, to keep with the local tradition.

    Dock 3

    After dinner, walk 15 minutes to Dock 3. This beach club sits right on the Elbe bank. Arrive just as the sun sets toward the NW. The view of the river from the front row is spectacular as the city lights begin to turn on.

Local tip

The tower of St. Michaelis has 450 steps or an elevator. Check the route for the walk to Dock 3 as it is a bit of a distance from the church.

  • St. Michaelis tower hours are 09:00-20:00 in July, so you will have plenty of time to climb up before sunset.
  • Old Commercial Room is open daily from 12:00-24:00.
  • Dock 3 is open daily from 11:00 in July.
