Arrive at York Redoubt early. The site opens to pedestrians at 8AM, but you can access the site throughout the year when closed to vehicles. Park outside the gate and head straight for the cliffs and viewpoints. The 1-hour bus ride from downtown means you need to leave well before dawn.

Watch the sunrise. On January 15th, the sun rises at 07:47, casting golden light starting around 16:13. The sun sets toward the WSW, offering a dramatic view over the harbour and cliffs. Bring a warm layer as the wind off the Atlantic is brisk this early.

Explore the fortifications. With the light up, wander through the tunnels, caves, and bunkers. The complex sprawls across the cliffs, so take your time walking the trails between the cannons and historic structures.
Local tip
Parking and washrooms are available from June 25 to September 4, daily from 8AM to 8PM. Outside these dates, pedestrians may continue to access the site, but parking is only available outside the gate. Check the bus route from downtown to ensure you get back in time.
Check before you go
- The bus ride from downtown takes about 1 hour. Plan your return trip carefully as the last bus may not run late enough for your schedule.
- Winter mornings are cold and windy. Dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes for the uneven terrain of the cliffs and trails.
