Timeline

  1. 08:00

    Kannon-in

Arrive at Kannon-in as it opens at 08:00. This temple on the Hashimoto River offers a quiet start with views of Mount Shizuki and the Sea of Japan. It was a secret meeting place for influential figures before the fall of the shogunate, so the atmosphere carries a sense of historical gravity.

  2. 08:45

    Hagi Christian Martyrs Memorial Park

Walk 8 minutes northeast to the Hagi Christian Martyrs Memorial Park. The path is short and steep. Here you will see the graves of Christians exiled from Nagasaki in 1868 and a monument to their memory. The site is solemn and reflective, offering a different layer of Hagi’s complex history.

  3. 09:30

    Grill Restaurant Kenran

Head to Grill Restaurant Kenran for lunch. Note that the restaurant opens at 17:00, so this step is timed for the late afternoon. Order the local Kenran Beef, served as steak or yakiniku. The adjacent Midoriya Honten sells meat to take home, but the grill restaurant is the place to sit and eat.

Local tip

Kannon-in opens at 08:00, so arriving early ensures you have the temple grounds to yourself. The walk to the Martyrs Memorial Park is steep, so wear sturdy shoes. Grill Restaurant Kenran does not open until 17:00, so plan your morning activities to finish well before then.
